Our feelings about this particular topic revolved around the creeping in of negative stereotypes and the resulting inability (or lack of desire) to present a balanced argument and discussion too. One way we determined would help this process along was to present our last formal reading circle in the frame of 'The 99', a comic representation of some aspects of the Qoran and Arabic cultures that aims to give a positive face to this faith and its peoples. Have a look at the blog we created for it if you like: http://rcweek10.wordpress.com/

I hear ya. At least you have technology available to you in 1017. Only once in the summer program a few years ago did I have a smart podium in my room. Since then, all instructors have had to resort to lugging around a projector, extension cord and speakers to any room across campus we needed to use it. It definitely encourages us to go in to class Dogme-style to a certain extent. Since I'm in Koffler House for the majority of my morning classes, I'm hoping that luggage won't kill my back this year.

Thanks Tyson! Always glad to hear that things didn't seem quite as bad from the back of the room as it did from where I was... nothing frustrates me more than fairly simple technology that simply won't work as it should...

I can see how frustrating it was last week when this stupid system wouldn't work out for you, but you always handle it well (except for the one tiny slip that made every instructor chuckle). I'm so glad you ended up getting it to show this week as it gives that extra element of visual interest needed to make it effective. =)

I had similar issues on Wednesday. I did discover that if you run iclicker off one USB and your presentation software (I use powerpoint) off another, it does work without any glitches (at least on the computers I'm using at UNBC). But then I run into the issue of forgetting one of the USB sticks...

I may just start bringing my Air once it gets here.

Thanks for the props. The ability to present to non-specialists is a very important part of being a historian, and as you demonstrate, one which the AHA offers a venue to demonstrate.

Jeremy, that's a good idea. Is it hard to keep track of? I'm just concerned as I have over 100 students in the class and am worried I'd end up spending a lot of time tracking their responses.
